Our Story

For 20 years now, I’ve enjoyed a daily 20-ingredient salad made up of turkey, salmon or tuna, sometimes some nuts like almonds or walnuts, along with tons of veggies like bell peppers, broccoli, cucumbers and artichokes. Although I love my trusty balsamic vinegar and olive oil topping, I’ve also searched far and wide for healthy and tasty salad dressing alternatives. Unfortunately, I’ve run into one of two scenarios. Either the dressings are laden with industrial seed and vegetable oils like canola, sunflower, corn and soy oils—the primary instigators in all manner of chronic disease—or they boast out-of-this-world health and ingredient claims but tasteless, bland “flavor.” I noticed the same dearth exists in condiments like ketchup, mayo and BBQ sauce. Sure, tasty enough options exist, but they all compromise your health and longevity!

So I set to work cooking up primal-inspired salad dressings and condiments full of healthful, natural fats, superfoods, antioxidant-rich, high-ORAC-scoring herbs and spices—with no offensive, synthetic vegetable and seed oils and no artificial colors, flavors or fillers! The first product I set out to reinvent was mayonnaise—the holy grail of healthy fats. The complete lack of acceptable mayonnaise in stores today is appalling. Most options contain canola oil, soybean oil, sugar, HFCS… the list goes on. For Primal Kitchen Mayo, I chose to use one of my favorite superfoods— avocado oil—instead of canola or soybean oil. Combine that with organic, cage-free eggs, organic vinegar and salt, and we’ve got one awesome-tasting mayonnaise! Healthy mayo—who knew?

Now there’s no more sacrificing flavor for health. All Primal Kitchen ingredients are selected according to the strictest standards of taste, natural healthfulness and phytonutrient potency. I'm a New York Times best-selling health author, blogger and entrepreneur, and I have a confession to make... I love to eat!

I’ve spent three decades researching and educating folks on why food is the key component to achieving and maintaining optimal health. I was once an elite endurance athlete who lost both health and vitality through an oppressive training regimen and a highly inflammatory diet. I vowed then that I would find a way to be as fit, strong and healthy as possible, with the least amount of pain, suffering and sacrifice required.

After extensive research and years of experimenting, I regained my health and enjoyment of life by simply changing how I ate. I was so blown away by the dramatic shifts in my own health that came from simply rethinking my food choices, that I started to wonder how many tens or hundreds of millions of others might be suffering the same fate.

I started blogging in 2006 at Mark’s Daily Apple about my life’s transformation with this incredible new way of eating and living. Since then, millions of people have followed the advice in my blog and best-selling books, The Primal Blueprint and Primal Endurance, and have experienced similar remarkable turnarounds. Most recently, many have enjoyed the power of metabolic flexibility gained through a keto reset, which is outlined in my latest New York Times Best Seller: The Keto Reset Diet.

FROM SCRAWNY TO COLLEGIATE TRACK STAR

Mark excels in high school track, and heads off to race for Williams College, where he studies biology. Mark’s Primal instincts begin to ignite as his interest in evolution and human performance grows.

Olympic Trial Heartache – Moving from Pain to Purpose

Mark’s dreams are dashed when he misses his trial race due to medical ailments, including GI issues, arthritis, heartburn and tendinitis. Rather than give up, Mark dedicates himself to finding solutions for his faltering health, not yet fully knowing that the conventional wisdom of the day for endurance athletes—load up on carbs and overtrain—were to blame.

Crossing the Finish Line

Addicted to endorphins and the thrill of competition, Mark finishes 4th in the IRONMAN World Championship. After a few years, Mark kicks off a career consulting and leading the International Triathlon Union’s anti-doping program. He is instrumental in bringing triathlon to the Olympic Games.

A Beautiful Bird, a Flourishing Family

Mark marries his beautiful fiancé, Carrie, and they have their first daughter, Devyn. Mark’s son, Kyle, is born later in LA. Mark continues to make health, wellness and everyday enjoyment of life his mission.

A Brand is Born

With readers engrossed in the nutrition and fitness content, Mark’s audience demands a collection of his insights, and Mark self publishes The Primal Blueprint, which becomes a best-selling manifesto. And, Grok becomes the iconic Primal persona.
