My name is Mark Sisson, and I’m a former elite endurance athlete who has made health and fitness my life’s work. Since trading in my professional running shoes 26 years ago, I’ve written a series of best-selling health and fitness books, I’ve designed natural state-of-the-art, health-enhancing nutritional supplements and educational diet and exercise systems, and I’ve published Mark’sDailyApple.com, the world’s most popular ancestral health website. Our Story

For 20 years now, I’ve enjoyed a daily 20-ingredient salad made up of turkey, salmon or tuna, sometimes some nuts like almonds or walnuts, along with tons of veggies like bell peppers, broccoli, cucumbers and artichokes. Although I love my trusty balsamic vinegar and olive oil topping, I’ve also searched far and wide for healthy and tasty salad dressing alternatives. Unfortunately, I’ve run into one of two scenarios. Either the dressings are laden with industrial seed and vegetable oils like canola, sunflower, corn and soy oils—the primary instigators in all manner of chronic disease—or they boast out-of-this-world health and ingredient claims but tasteless, bland “flavor.” I noticed the same dearth exists in condiments like ketchup, mayo and BBQ sauce. Sure, tasty enough options exist, but they all compromise your health and longevity!

 

So I set to work cooking up Primal-inspired salad dressings and condiments full of healthful, natural fats, superfoods, antioxidant-rich, high-ORAC-scoring herbs and spices—with no offensive, synthetic vegetable and seed oils and no artificial colors, flavors or fillers! The first product I set out to reinvent was mayonnaise—the holy grail of healthy fats. The complete lack of acceptable mayonnaise in-store today is appalling. Most options contain canola oil, soybean oil, sugar, HFCS… the list goes on. For Primal Kitchen Mayo, I chose to use one of my favorite superfoods – avocado oil – instead of canola or soybean oil. Combine that with organic, cage-free eggs, organic vinegar and salt and we’ve got one awesome tasting mayonnaise! Healthy mayo—who knew?

WHY AREN’T WE 100% ORGANIC?

  You see, while organic is non-negotiable for some ingredients like eggs, it’s just not worth the huge added expense for certain others. Avocados, for instance, don’t need to be bought organic, because pesticides can’t penetrate their tough skin no matter how hard they try! Plus, organic avocado oil costs almost four times as much as non-organic, so you’d be paying four times as much for a jar of mayo with no appreciable added benefit. Now, if we’d wanted to rip you off just for the organic claim, we could have opted for organic canola oil. But that’s just not our style—we’d rather mix non-organic, quality ingredients when appropriate with select organic nutrients, rather than contaminate our foods.

GROK WHO?

  Grok is the oft-cited star of our Paleolithic backdrop, the poster-persona of the Primal Kitchen itself. Think of him as the non-gender specific collective archetype of the typical hunter-gatherer who thrived on evolutionary tried and true lifestyle behaviors: diet, exercise, sleep, stress, etc. And although Grok hearkens back to the cave-dwelling days, by modern standards he’s the pinnacle of physiological vigor. Picture a tall, strapping figure: lean, ripped, agile. And as for what’s underneath? An enviable workup: low to no systemic inflammation, low insulin and blood glucose readings, healthy (i.e. ideally functional) cholesterol and triglyceride levels. “Hmm, you say, closing your menu. ‘I’ll have what he’s having.'”
